At-a-glance

An Impressive Year for Whippet Athletes
Girls Win 14th Straight Conference Title - The Whippet female harriers claimed their fourteenth consecutive Southern Lakes Conference championship in Elkhorn on Tuesday, May 15. The boys have been conference champs eleven of the last fourteen years. -
As the three o’clock bell rings and students frantically leave the classrooms to head off into the warm weather, some of them might take the time to notice the absolute silence emanating from the empty soccer fields and tennis courts. The “sport-year” 2006-2007 is over, except for only a few athletes who will participate in the state track meet held this weekend.

2006-2007 saw a confirmation of how Whitewater’s hegemonic grasp on the Southern Lakes Conference’s track-and-field competition tightened after the girls won a 14th title in a row and the boys retained their dominance over an ambitious Milton team. Moreover, the boys’ soccer team, led by a fantastic senior class—seven seniors out of 11 starters—won the conference championship for the first time in the school’s history.

2006-2007 saw a strong year for the football team, which once again qualified for the playoffs, and was not only renewal of basketball competitiveness on the boys’ side, but an exciting and deep journey into the playoffs, halted only by state champion Monroe.

2006-2007 saw two incredible streaks of wins and losses on the girls’ basketball side, while the volleyball team achieved another season marked by countless victories, streaks of which seem to be broken only by Jefferson.

2006-2007 saw the hard-work of all the other athletic programs, ranging from battling low-numbers, adapting to a new coach, or simply training underclassmen.

June 10, 2007, will see many student-athletes graduate, but it will especially see two monuments of the Whitewater athletics’ history receive their diplomas and end their prolific career as Whippets. Liz Amici, volleyball, basketball, and track athlete, will continue showing her bouncing prowess at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, while Michael Zweifel, football, basketball, and track athlete, will play football at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
