At-a-glance

Do you want this to happen to you? Didn't think so. -
Staph infections – we’ve all heard about them, from a doctor, a parent, a teacher, or on the news. But what’s the big deal with them lately? Why are news stations everywhere suddenly putting out stories about a disease that’s been around for as long as we can remember?

First, though, what exactly is a staph infection? Staph infections occur when an open wound is infected with Staphylococcus bacteria. It is estimated that one out of every three people carries the bacteria, but you can carry it without being infected. Infections themselves aren’t all that rare, either. Most infections can easily be killed with antibiotics. What’s been concerning people lately is the exception - Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aurous, or MRSA, a strain of staph that does not respond to antibiotics. It is so dangerous that a senior in Virginia died from it on October 15.

What can you do to prevent it? Staph bacteria are passed from person to person on anything. Sharing clothes, water bottles, and lip glosses can transfer it. Low hygiene can also pass it along, especially in bathrooms and locker rooms. At one high school this fall, eight football players were diagnosed with staph infections. You shouldn’t share towels, you should wear shoes or socks at all times, and be sure to practice good hygienic habits wherever you are and whatever you do.
