Word of mouth

After third period, sophomore Meghan Culp reads Twilight out loud to English Teacher Ginny Parr’s class. Meghan decided to read this book once she finished with a series by Nora Roberts. “I’m into fantasy books,” Meghan said. “My friend recommended

this book to me because it’s a fantasy about vampires.” -

Growing in popularity, New York Times’ best-seller, Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series depicting the tale of a vampire love story has left students thirsting for more.

“After seeing a co-worker read the book at work, I became intrigued with the hype surrounding the book,” junior Gianna Della Sera said. “This novel about hard relationships has captured my attention ever since.”

Due to the novel’s wild popularity, word of mouth helps spread further awareness as well as help readers set personal goals.

“I heard about this book when senior Whitney Stuckey told me about it,” senior Lisel Kraus said. “Because this book is easy for everyone to relate to, each person can form their own ideas about the characters, taking away something different”

Along with the perception of being a good book, the compelling story of a human girl, Bella Swan, falling in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen, drew readers in with the complexities and believability of the character’s emotions.

“When Bella is happy, I can feel her emotion,” senior Alyssa Lancaster said. “Overall, this book elated me, because I knew that the characters were like Romeo and Juliet, their relationship seemingly doomed based on their differences.”

However, the novel affected readers past the time that they spent flipping pages.

“It expanded my frame of mind and made me look at the world differently. Now I’m more open and accepting to different things,” senior Whitney Stuckey said.

Along with Stephenie Meyer’s debut novel, Twilight, there are two other books in the series, New Moon and Eclipse. A motion picture remains in the works for her first novel by Summit Entertainment, staring actors Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

“I think Stephenie Meyer has a wonderful range of creativity,” Alyssa said. “When I read this book, I’m taken to another place, I let go of my anxieties, hopeful that true love will survive through anything.”
