After several intense games of dodgeball, the attention of the Upper School was directed to Smurfit Hall, where Mr. Hutsko and Mr. Konen had successfully prepared a quiet and peaceful setting for the competitive chess players. Upon explaining the rules (1 point for a win, ½ point for a draw and zero points for a loss), the matches were kicked off with the seniors playing the juniors and the sophomores battling the freshmen. At the beginning of the second and final round, the scores were all relatively close, putting pressure on the juniors, sophomores and seniors; however, as the matches began, the juniors slowly began to conquer. The junior team comprised of Daniel Goldfarb, Moshe Libbin, AJ Pitchman and Miroslav Kriz who all played tough matches ultimately causing a two point victory over both the sophomores and seniors. Following the last regular match, the sophomores and seniors were tied for second place, so a 10 minute tie breaking blitz game was in order, and sophomore Neil Mehta secured the victory over senior Michael Fine in a very exciting game. Finally, the freshmen came in last place, but have future potential with rising players like Giovanni and Matthew Kydd; nonetheless, no grade could prevent the juniors from marching to victory, or as Mr. Konen put it, “the juniors won but by a much more narrow gap than I expected.”
