Here’s a sneak peak at the 2008 school year! The World Language teachers and Mrs. Folino are establishing their own Academy at Carl Schurz High School. The academy will help students study the languages of French, Italian, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese. To show how much Schurz is trying to get the program together, they are looking for a Mandarin Chinese teacher. According to language teacher Ms. Souza, “The Global Studies and World Language Academy will offer students the chance to gain a world class education.”
So, how did it start? Mrs. Folino began her career as an E.S.L. teacher. According to her, she majored in Linguistics, and wants to provide the Schurz newcomers a chance to start language study at the beginning of their high school experiences; she hopes to broaden the horizons of her students.
This past year, Mrs. Folino traveled to China and met with school officials. Also, Ms. Souza and Ms. Gioiosa went to Milan, Italy. Both the principal and teachers established a connection with our sister schools in these countries. Students can now take AP classes in French, Italian and Spanish.
Beginning this year, interested 8th grade students will apply to the academy in their grammar schools. This will be a four year plan of study in which all students take reading, science, social studies, etc. and the language of their choice. Only dedicated students with good attendance and a minimum C+ average will be selected for the academy. Good Luck!
