Schurz High School participated in an art competition at the Hispanic Cultural Museum. Schurz won 1st place from TFC Bank , and the Art department of Schurz received $2,000. The brilliant artist, Roberto Peregrina, won a scholarship for the Summer Arts Program at the American Academy of Art. In the contest, every high school made artwork that related to Hispanic people, history, and culture. The art department of Schurz High School, Ms. Canty, Ms. King, Ms. Reynolds, and Ms. Deutch made students draw or paint anything that had to deal with the Hispanic Culture on white paper. Each piece of paper was 3in. tall and half a yard long. Once the paper was painted they were combined together in a crossing pattern almost like a quilt.

After all the paintings were combined together, it was then painted on top by Schurz High School Senior Roberto Peregrina. Roberto used purple paint to create the South American Continent, with its four Hispanic heroes. The four Hispanic heroes were Roberto Clemente, who represents athletics, Cesar Chavez who represents politics, Diego Rivera who represents art, and Che Guevara who represents the Hispanic revolution. Roberto Clemente, Cesar Chavez, and Diego Rivera shared eyes in the painting. The painting was saying that these Hispanic heroes shared or have the same goal or wishes to make Hispanic generations better.

In all, Roberto Peregrina, the Schurz Art Department, and the Art students worked hard on the piece and succeeded because they put hard work, patience, and especially heart into their work to win the contest.
