Have you ever experienced going up to the board and having to solve that difficult math problem? Don’t you get a sense of accomplishment when you have answered it correctly? If you are interested in math, and the love the feeling you get when you have accomplished a difficult math problem, think about participating in the Schurz Math League. If you are interested and want a challenge that comes with great benefits, the Math League may be the perfect fit for you.

I went directly to the source of the Math League; I interviewed Ms.Adkins, an advanced algebra with trigonometry, advanced algebra with trigonometry (honors), microeconomics teacher and the person who is in charge of the Math League. The purpose of forming the Math League was that she saw many students were interested in math. She then went to Mr. Kamberis who teaches Honors Geometry and Academic Decathlon and from there they created a Math League. There had been one before, but it didn't continue, so from there they decided to make a new one. The new Math League started six years ago.

One of the main benefits students get from being in the Math League is it gives you extra practice for math. It prepares you for the S.A.T.'s and A.C.T.’s and for college. The league is something fun for people who are interested and enjoy math.

Ms. Adkins has personally taken the tests that the Math League takes when competing, and she says they are very advanced exams. I asked her what she thought the students were thinking when taking the tests, she responded, "They are probably thinking how hard the test is." She also says that the students who take the tests should have seen some of the material before, and should understand some of it. They should see the exam as a challenge. I have actually taken the test for Mr. Kamberis's class. For me, that test was very hard; it was a challenge. I had seen the material before, but this was so much harder.

To sum up, a lot of careers involve mathematics and being in the Math League prepares students for these professions. If you enjoy math, desire a challenge and want to have fun, think about joining the Schurz Math League!
