During the week of winterims, Jan. 4-9, junior Zachary Feldman served an internship to an orthopedic surgeon.
He shadowed Dr. Dan Gurley for the week, and watched him meet with patients and perform surgeries. Gurley meets with patients at his office at College Park and does surgeries at Overland Park Regional and Surgicenter of Johnson County.
Feldman decided to do this internship because he is very interested in Orthopedic Surgery.
“I want to be an Orthopedic Surgeon,” said Feldman. “I thought it would be a good experience to see if I want to pursue this profession or not.”
“My favorite part of my internship was the surgeries,” said Feldman. He watched many different surgeries including a Debridement for Synovial Chondromatosis, a total knee replacement, an ACL allograft, a meniscus surgery, a rotator cuff surgery, and one where the doctor had to reattach the bicep muscle.
“I really enjoyed the knee replacement surgery because they opened up the whole leg and I could see everything inside, I learned a lot about it.”
Feldman enjoyed his internship and learned a lot about being an Orthopedic Surgeon.
“It made me even more interested in orthopedic surgery,” said Feldman. “I feel like it would be a very interesting profession to pursue and would really like to become an orthopedic surgeon.”
Feldman benefited greatly from his experience in orthopedics and said, “I would like to shadow Dr. Gurley again this summer and watch him do more surgeries.”
“I think taking an internship is a great experience,” said Feldman. “If anyone has an opportunity to shadow an interesting job they should do it. I learned a lot of things that I couldn’t have learned any other way.”
