A big reason why the Chiefs are doing so well is of their head coach, Dick Vermeil. According to players, his upbeat attitude and positive motivation are key factors in getting the best out of his players.
It also helps that this is Vermeil’s third year with the Chiefs, and, in the past it has been proven that Vermeil does quite well in his third year with teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles and the St. Louis Rams.
Vermeil’s big plan is making decent players into good players and good players into great players. The recent testament to Vermeil’s style is Chiefs wide receiver, Dante Hall.
“Dante Hall is amazing,” junior Matt Rissien said. “He’s won us two games with his spectacular plays.”
Some people predict the Chiefs will go all the way to the Super Bowl.
“I know they can do it,” senior Aaron Lutzk said.
The Chiefs are among the league leaders in total points scored and average the most points per game. On Monday Night Football, against the Oakland Raiders, Chiefs tight-end Tony Gonzalez became the leading receiver in franchise history. Also, Chiefs running back, Priest Holmes, is leading the league with 12 touchdowns.
However it is not just the Chiefs’ offense that is winning games. Last year, the Chiefs led the league in all most every offensive category, but the Chiefs’ defense was one of the leagues’ worst. This year the Chiefs’ defense has improved. This year the Chiefs’ defense is ranked twenty-sixth and gives up five less points per game according to ESPN.com.
“The Chiefs’ defense rules,” senior Isaac Gortenburg said. “They get almost one turnover every week, and then turn those turnovers into points.”
Another reason the Chiefs are better this year than they were last year is their “no quit” attitude. According to interviews with some players, they believe they are in every game no matter what the score.
Chief fans saw this “no quit” philosophy play out in the game against the Green Bay Packers. The Chiefs were trailing 31-14 in the fourth quarter, but came back to force the game into overtime.
The Chiefs won the coin toss and then rushed the ball nine consecutive times with Holmes to get into field goal range. Then, Kicker Morten Anderson was blocked and Green Bay took possession. The very next play, Green Bay running back, Ahman Green fumbled the ball, and the Chiefs recovered. Instead of playing it safe, Chiefs quarterback Trent Green threw a pass to, Chiefs wide receiver, Eddie Kennison down the sideline for a touchdown.
“That was one of the greatest comebacks I have ever seen,” former Academy student Zach Claster said.
The following week, the Chiefs were on Monday Night Football against the Oakland Raiders. The Chiefs won by one touchdown, but did not look their best according to Chiefs fans.
The following week the Chiefs were again on primetime television for Sunday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs won 38-5, forcing seven turnovers and maintained an undefeated season.
“The last three teams to go 8-0 won the Super Bowl, and there’s about to be a fourth team added to that list,” junior Alex Claster said
The Chiefs are proving to being a dominant force in the NFL, according to SportsCenter analysts. Senior Keith Gersh supports the analyst’s views about the Chiefs.
“The Chiefs have as good a chance of winning the Super Bowl as apple sauce tasting like apples.”
