Poplar Bluff High School’s golf team is off to a great start. The team has won almost every single match of the season. Of course that is expected because the golfers practice from 3:25 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. every weekday.

Coach Billy Pyland is the head coach for both varsity and junior varsity teams. There is no set varsity and JV and team members have alternating status every match. This year’s team includes Kyle Brooks, Trent Hillis, Tyler Hillis, Danner McCauley, Corey Poteet, Taylor Price, Josh Rathbun, Lindsay Riffle, Tyler Shulse and Zack Stricker.

Varsity and J.V. teams played against Sikeston’s Varsity and J.V. and Poplar Bluff won both matches. Poplar Bluff J.V. played against Kennett and Doniphan’s Varsity teams. Kennet won with a score of 190. Poplar Bluff came in second with a score of 192 and Doniphan followed with a score of 215. Senior Riffle, the only girl on the team, had the best score for Poplar Bluff at 45.

Varsity played at Notre Dame and won by 12 shots.

The team has only played at one tournament so far. It was an invitational with 13 teams and 65 players. Both Hillis and McCauley earned medals for individual best scores.

Coach Billy Pyland said, “I’m very pleased with how the season is going. The kids work hard and play hard. The long practices are definitely paying off.”
