Families whose homes have been destroyed by the disastrous California wildfires, which have already burned more than 600,000 acres, are in desperate need of essentials. These necessities, which can be found in almost any household, include clothing, pet food, cleaning supplies, and toiletries. However, any contribution can help.

So far the devastating fire has destroyed more than 1,900 homes, killed 16 people, along with 38 others missing.

University High School has been active in these past few weeks, coordinating with Goodwill in gathering donations and goods for fire victims.

Junior Zoe Oderberg has been especially generous, personally transporting two vans full of supplies to Goodwill.

History teacher Kyle Laughlin first introduced the idea when he received an e-mail from a friend with a list of charity organizations requesting aid.

“I just saw a need, had an idea, and brought it to the students,” said Laughlin. “They really took the bull by the horns, and I take no credit for what has been done.”

Most of the fire victims were middle and lower class citizens, with no fire insurance. They are in need of items that most people take for granted, and probably have a surplus of lying around their garages.

The student body has helped, although much work is still needed to be done to aid the victims. Further donations are also highly encouraged.

“It’s really powerful and uplifting to see all these donations pour into my classroom,” said Laughlin.
