Another exciting season of Cross Country is underway, and the 2008 squad hopes to replicate the success that they enjoyed last season.

The Cats are unbeaten in their first two meets, good for a 2-0 record.

In their first meet, the Cats won handily, with all six of their squads winning against Westchester.

The Cats won their next meet versus Venice with similar ease, with all six of their teams, boys’ and girls’ freshman/sophomore, junior varsity, and varsity squads emerging victorious.

The Cats’ strong start gives Head Coach Kelly Aguda reason to expect greatness from this year’s runners.

“I expect the kids to keep working hard,” she said.

“I think we might win the Frosh/Soph Western League Championship for both girls and boys.”

Aguda singled out several prominent Wildcat runners for their superior skills and achievements.

“Seniors Claudius Shropshire (Varsity Captain), Edwin Cardoza, and Felix Palencia, juniors Marcus Issa and Jesus Ortiz, and sophomore Pedro Vega have all stepped up to the plate,” she said.

“Sophomores Diana Cruz, Vanessa Mendez, and Cassandra Menendez have stood out for the girls,” Aguda added.

“As well as senior Christie Westrem, who is the Girls Varsity Captain.”

Shropshire also had high praise for the Cats.

“Even though we were unable to run last week due to the fires, we were able to make up for it on Monday when we raced Venice.

Our Varsity boys and girls teams are improving as a whole, with many of our runners in the lead group of the race.”

In addition to the Cats’ running prowess, Aguda also admires the team’s camaraderie.

“I love this team,” she said. “They’re enthusiastic. What’s best is that they love each other, which is awesome.”

With their outstanding team spirit, greater success awaits.
