It’s Kind of a Funny Story recently came out in select theaters. It focuses on the issue of teen depression and the road to recovery and self-discovery. The movie stars Keir Gilchrist (The United States of Tara), Emma Roberts (Valentine’s Day), and Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover).
It’s Kind of a Funny Story is based on the book by Ned Vizzini. The book was influenced by his own issues with depression and his experiences in the psychiatric ward of a hospital. In the film, 16 year-old Craig Gilner (Gilchrist) has dreams about killing himself and decides to go to the hospital to get some help. Craig has a loving mother and a father that puts Craig’s academic achievments in front of his health. Even though he visits the hospital to get anti-depressants, Craig is reluctantly admitted into the adult psychiatric ward (the teen ward was undergoing renovations). In the psychiatric ward, he makes friends with a suicidal, depressed, yet happy-go-lucky father, Bobby (Galifianakis). He also meets a teen girl, Noel (Roberta), who was admitted after cutting herself. The movie is all about being positive and opening your eyes to see what’s around you.
The main character has a good life but is way too stressed and is so focused on the negative things in life that he loses sight of the positive. It takes a small place full of clinically insane people to show him how wrong he is. This movie is inspiring and teaches you to hope for a brighter future. It is a remarkable film. It also shows the audiences that they need to stop and enjoy the finer things in life. Craig sums it up perfectly: “You’ve got to get out more often; there’s a whole world out there.” The cast has great chemistry and contributes to the movie as a whole. Roberts, Gilchrist, and Galifianakis awe audiences everywhere with their witty combacks and jokes. It’s Kind of a Funny Story is deep and refreshing. It’s Kind of a Funny Story is definitely a must see. It’s touching, heartfelt, and really funny. It’s Kind of a Funny Story is now playing in theaters everywhere. It is rated PG-13 and has a run time of 110 minutes.
