Tenth and eleventh grade social studies students will enter various projects for the Second Annual History Day, which will be presented and judged in the student cafeteria on Dec. 8 and 9.

The coordinator, social studies teacher Mark Rhomberg, is proud of the turn out so far and the effort the students have put into their projects.

“There are better projects with more analysis, and the students are acting like historians,” said Rhomberg.

Teachers hope History Day teaches and prepares students for the rigors of college research papers. Recalling his college days when professors would not tell him how to do the research or complete the papers, Rhomberg wants to teach students now. He spent time as a teacher’s assistant at UCLA and has seen the inexperience most college students have when it comes to researching.

Uni alumni, teachers, college professors, administrators, and district staff will be judging the projects.

Along with them, represent-atives from the United Talent Agency will come and judge the projects.

This year’s theme, which all projects must revolve around and discuss, is Communication in History: the Key to Under-standing.

Students must research their projects thoroughly, and their work can range from a research paper to an exhibit or a documentary.

The winning projects will go to the state competition in San Diego.

And although winners do not receive money, they receive a certificate of achievement and a better understanding of com-munication in the past and how it can be used in the future.
