For many children in the world Christmas morning means unwrapping presents under the tree in the middle of the living room. However, there are a number of underprivileged families who cannot afford to buy gifts for their kids during the holidays. That is why students in the Leadership class have decided to organize the Second Annual Toy Drive to spread holiday cheer to those in need.
ASB President Derek Nardo and Historian Jorge Varon came up with the idea for the toy drive hoping to make a difference for those who would otherwise have nothing to look forward to this season. To prepare they have created posters and conducted P.A. announcements to spread the word to the student body. Their goal is to raise at least 50 toys this season for both boys and girls.
When asked how he feels about the drive Jorge answered, “I remember my childhood counting the days down until my parents gave me my presents. Since I’m Jewish they gave me eight presents, one for each day. The joy I got was something I still cherish today as an adult, and I simply wanted to spread that joy to those less fortunate than me. ”
Toys of all shapes, colors and sizes are accepted in the toy drive and each one can help put a smile on a child’s face. Students who donate new unwrapped toys will receive an hour of community service for each toy. On Dec. 16, the last day to donate in room 100, the toys will be taken to the local Toys for Tots.
For those who do not know Toys for Tots is an organization that gives toys to children who would otherwise be unable to receive presents. The program founded in 1947 is run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve and has won several awards including the Outstanding Nonprofit Organization of the Year in 2003 for its service.
The Toy Drive is one of the many fundraisers planned by the ASB Leadership class this season along with the canned food drive to help those in need. So what are you waiting for? Donate today in room 100 because the toy you give can convey hope and bring holiday cheer to a child. Remember that with your help we can bring joy to a family this holiday season and that is the best gift you can give to others and yourself.
