President Bush has just unveiled a new plan regarding immigration. According to the plan that the president has put forth, the federal government will crack down on immigration while simultaneously inflating the number of temporary work visas issued in the United States.

In California, at least, illegal immigration has been detrimental economically. Illegal immigrants pay no taxes, yet they use such government-provided services as public schools and welfare. Since none of the illegal immigrants possess health insurance, they go directly to the Emergency Room when they are afflicted with ailments. And because they cannot pay the exorbitant hospital bills, they aren’t required to.

The ER’s have made fast their doors because they are have become too unprofitable to continue operating, due in part to aliens’ abuse of the system. Moreover, the occupations they hold are generally the same types of jobs once held by teenagers. And of course, because the aliens tend to cling to these jobs, generations of teenagers will be unable to find employment.

Tougher border patrol is desperately needed and will definitely be welcomed. But on the other hand, the accompanying increase in temporary work visas issued will only serve to compound the problem.

Bush intends to further his position with the Latino voting bloc by pandering to them through these measures. Has he not re-alized his policies are redundant?

On the one hand, illegal immigrants will be prevented from entering the states, but on the other hand those already inside the country will be granted amnesty through the guest worker permits, indicating no change whatsoever. Bush hopes to garner support for his political organization while he is still in office, and is willing to throw morality out with the bathwater to achieve this end.
