After losing nine seniors from the ‘06-’07 boys’ basketball team, the new Streaks look to rebound with a younger class. With juniors like Brian Gernant, Tanner Libby, and Craig Steward, the Streaks have a bright future.

Although tryouts were tough without the seniors, the team is making up ground day by day. “They started off slow, but that is what I figured. We have been improving almost every day,” said Gernant.

The Streaks started in a new direction with coach Jeff Houston and new assistant coach Elmer Dickerson, who played for the Silver Streaks from 1987-1991 as a dominating forward. “We have a new offensive set which will take time to get used to, but I think it is going to work,” said an eager Gernant.

With every team comes a leader. “Isaiah Peachey is the strongest asset to the team because he is never negative and always positive no matter what the situation is,” declared Gernant.

“We have a lot of ways to score,” said Peachey, a senior point guard. He added that one of the weaknesses of the team is that it’s “a little on the small side player-wise.”

Peachey stated that the crowd motivates him, while other players say listening to music before the game helps them. That motivation paid off early. The hungry Streaks went 2-1 in the Dunlap tournament and beat Rock Island at home in a double overtime 63-58.

Isiah Cunningham, senior, led Galesburg scorers with 14 points in the Rock Island game. Libby added 13 points and six blocks.

The team next faced a well disciplined United Township at East Moline. With the 55- 33 loss, the Streaks saw their conference record evened up at 1-1. Cunningham scored 17 points in the game.

The young Streaks struggled leading up to the holiday following a 65-64 loss in overtime to Rock Island Alleman on Friday, Dec. 14. The lead was up grabs several times during the last quarter. GHS lost in overtime 65-64.
