New security guards help outWednesday, November 29, 2006 By Angie Blanco
With two new security guards, Leonarda Lopez and Bernard Brown, Coral Gables has become a more tame school. The more security Gables has, the better, because before we know it, this place is going to turn into “thug mansion”. (I don’t think I can put that in there but I’ll take my chances haha). Leonarda Lopez is the newest security guard considering she has only been at our school for about three months. On the other hand, Bernard Brown has been at Gables for about a year and half but is still considered a new security compared to the other security guards. “I’ve been here for about three months, and from what I’ve seen, the kids aren’t bad kids, they just do things that teenage kids do,” Lopez said. Having extra security helps prevent what is expected by security. That does not only mean Gables though, it is with any school. “The kids aren’t bad. They’re pretty tame. Everything is pretty much under control. It’s my job to keep it this way,” Brown said. Both new security guards feel similarly about the students at this school. “I think having more security would be a good idea just to be on the safe side,” Lopez said. This is not the case with Brown. “Having more security guards here would seem unnecessary to me because the security guards that are already here take care of this school just fine,” Brown said. Most people would like to be doing something other than what they are doing with their lives, even security guards. Even though what they desire might be a job contributing to a school, it is something other than securing a school. “I would like to be a Spanish teacher of an elementary school, but I didn’t really have the opportunity because my language did not permit it. I became a security guard only because I was trying to find a job,” Lopez said. While Lopez is not doing exactly what she would like, Brown is serving as a coach. “Other than securing the school, I also help the coaches. I help mostly with the girls’ basketball team and their games. I make sure there aren’t any fights, basically what I do when I secure the school,” Brown said. Another part of a security guard’s job is to make sure that students do not leave class whenever they please and that they follow the bell schedule to prevent being late or absent. This is also part of a security guard’s job. “I also make sure students are in their classrooms when the bell rings. I don’t like seeing students roaming the halls when the bell has already rung,” Brown said. |
