Girls volleyball spikes season with 14-2 record

Tuesday, December 04, 2007 By Erika Erazo and Maria Malachowski

With an appearance last year in the Suffolk Class AA title game against Ward Melville, expectations for this year’s Girls Varsity volleyball team were high. Last year, after a sweep of West Islip in the semifinals, Lindenhurst went on to the title game. This year, with finals looming, Lindenhurst once again faced Ward Melville. In a back and forth contest, the girls volleyball team dropped the first game and came back to win the second. They lost the final decisive fourth game with a close score of 25-23. This exceptional group of young and talented players worked hard all year playing various league and out of league teams in order to reach the semi-finals. The Girls Varsity volleyball team started off the season with a seven game win streak against teams in their league. During this time, they only lost one match against Glenn, a team in League VII. Their first loss to a team in their league was against Ward Melville in mid-October. While the team did not reach the finals, finishing with a record of 14-4 and placing second in the league hardly constitutes a failure. All-County players Kylie Clemens (‘09), Samantha Lukralle (‘09), and Samantha Rosario (‘09) along with All-League player Katie Budas (‘08) were key components of the teams. “As a team we came a long way this season. We can’t wait to see how much we improved this year,” reflected Samantha Lukralle, a junior on the team. With as much talent and heart that these girls on the Varsity volleyball team have demonstrated, they will surely be back again next year seeking a county title.
