Cloverfield: The CloverField movie releaseTuesday, May 27, 2008 By Brittany R.
The movie starts out in New York at a going away surprise party for a guy named Rob (Michael Stahl-David) who is planning a promotional trip to Japan. All of Rob’s friends show up in the New York apartment including his secret love, Beth (Odette Yustman). Then a camera is given out to a dorky guy named Hud (T J Miller) to capture everyone’s goodbyes on film. All of a sudden, a giant noise comes from the city and everyone at the party rushes to the top of the building to check it out. A few blank stares and the Statue of Liberty goes flying through the air; everyone panics and the building lights go out. Rushing out onto the streets, the party members run away from the monster that picks up people one by one and destroys them in its mouth. After the monster spotting, the rest of the film is fast paced. The entire night, running around the city, is taped on video camera, by Hud. Director Matt Reeves said, “We’ve used the vibe of that handicam thing to create a mood, feeling and an experience.” The camera was supposedly confiscated by the government after the attack. The video shows you everything that happened while trying to escape the city. “People need to see this, you know? It’s gonna be important”, says Hud while filming the movie. Since the video was taped by Hud, the whole movie is a little shaky but it makes it more realistic -just some caution to all of those who are a little motion sickness. Throughout the night of attack, the audience can associate the panic and fear that’s running through the actors’ heads as their own, making this film a must see. Since the government couldn’t kill the monster, they ended up sending nuclear missiles to wipe out New York, killing everyone, including romantic duo Rob and Beth. “My name is Elizabeth McIntyre. I don’t know why this is happening. And we’re going to wait here until this passes”, these were some of the final words in this movie. Most people thought that the Cloverfield monster was going to be Godzilla, or a giant whale, but what was that thing really? The answer: anything you want it to be. This monster horror/romance movie wasn’t just another remake of a past film. It’s something completely different. The directors of this film wanted the audience to be creative, and make up their own monster as the Cloverfield monster. |
