Budget cuts ignite rallyTuesday, February 03, 2009 By Katie Condon
Junior Joseph Egozi speaks at the Miami-Dade County Council of PTAs/PTSAs "Not My Child! Not Our Schools!" Rally on Jan. 14 as PTA President Mindy Gould watches. The crowd met outside the Miami-Dade School Board Building to protest the near $300 million already cut from this year’s $5.5 billion budget. $80 million more is expected to be cut before the end of the year. Students, however, were not the only ones speaking out. Two mothers, Bibiana Salmon and Malexys Morales went on a hunger strike for a week. They stayed outside of Ronald Reagan Doral High School, where their children attend. |
