Prom '09Tuesday, April 28, 2009 By Mike Farner
Lights, Camera, Action! These were the words of the evening at University High School’s junior-senior prom on Saturday April 18, 2009. The theme of the event was a star-studded Hollywood affair. And quite an affair it was from the mesmerizing strobe lights, courtesy of DJ Ethan Castro, to the table decorations created by the prom committee. In keeping with the theme the tables were decked out with would-be academy awards, clapboards noted the occasion, and star-shaped sunglass party favors added a bit of whimsy to the atmosphere. In addition to the festivities in the main building, there was a garden outside of the dance hall that provided people with a semi-quiet place to sit and chat (or recover from the strobe lights). Attendees to the event enjoyed a night of dancing, mingling, and merrymaking. The dance was a nice release from the now daily pressures and reminders of the impending AP exams, finals, SATs, etc. As with all proms, the highlight of the night is the announcement of the king and queen. After counting the ballots it was proclaimed that Jacob Hurst was king, and Shannon Rindahl was queen. The cheering of the crowd was both deafening and ambivalent as the couple danced amidst the onlookers. After the song was over, the crowd once more applauded and promptly congregated again on the dance floor to pick up where their last dance left off. I’m sure that I voice the opinion of many when I congratulate the prom committee and anyone else who had a part in this on pulling off a successful dance. Thanks are also in order to all of the DJs who worked tirelessly to create the right mood with the music and lighting. Overall, it was a fun and special event that few (if any) will forget and many will want to relive again. |
