My Heart In a Suitcase

On May 11, 2009 Riverhead Middle School 8 th grade students went to see a performance of My Heart in a Suitcase. This play was based on the story with the same title as the play, written by Anne L. Fox. The story is about the family of Anne Lehmann (author), her Jewish family and her best friend, Dorit, who happens to be protestant, and their lives in Berlin, Germany right before the Holocaust. My Heart in a Suitcase shows the true story of Jewish people and their lives before the Holocaust and how they were deeply affected. After taking a trip to Amsterdam, Anne comes home to her family and best friend right before things start taking a tragic turn. Her friend, Dorit, acts like a regular German girl and is forced to join the rest of the Nazi children at their school. Her father and mother, Vati and Mutti, become jobless due to their religion, and makes little Anne Lehmann feel helpless. Then came “the night of the broken glass”, also called Kristallnacht (Crystal Night), a brutal attack of homes, shops and synagogues of the Jewish families. This event led the Lehmann family to make a tough decision which involved a tragic end. I personally thought that the play was fabulous and really captured attention of the crowd. My Heart in a Suitcase was very touching and accurately displayed emotions, memories, feelings and moments of the Holocaust that should all be recognized.
