From TV to the big screen

Thursday, April 22, 2004 By Layne Jeffrey

The rebirth of old-school television shows into feature-length Hollywood films isn’t a new idea. Wherever there’s a hit show, there’s a good chance someone with a lot of money will decide to invest in making it a movie. The most recent example is the blockbuster “Starsky and Hutch” starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. But with this, it seems a wave of old television shows are being handed to producers, writers, and directors. Coming soon in 2004, Bewitched will be hitting the big screen, starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. Along with that, soon (and by that, I mean within the next year and a half) we’ll be paying to see Dukes of Hazzard (with rumors of Aston Kutcher and Katie Holmes filling the lead roles), I Dream of Jeannie and The 6 Million Dollar Man (possibly with Jim Carrey). This sudden outburst of movies has already created a buzz among movie lovers and watchers alike. But questions begin to arise. In 15 years, are we going to see Will and Grace or Friends gracing the silver screen? Or maybe even a splicing of reality television with film, like “reality movies.”
