Legally Blonde: The musical is an A+ for a girls’ night outWednesday, February 24, 2010 By Erica Rasquinha
This peppy and just all-around happy performance really surprised me with its creative adaptation of the movie. Elle Woods starts off as the stereotypical sorority girl, but when her boyfriend dumps her instead of proposing, she decides to get serious. Elle heads for Harvard Law School with plans of winning her sweetheart back but changes her goal to become a successful lawyer — of course with her chihuahua sidekick, Bruiser. The songs are mostly upbeat and have a variety of different messages to keep the story going. Oddly, I expected this musical to have a little more words than singing, but then I realized it wouldn’t have the same strong effect. Becky Gulsvig, who plays Elle Woods, and Michael Rupert, who plays Professor Calahan, did a great job not only acting in character, but also making their voices fit whom they were portraying. Honestly, I would have liked to see a little more males at the show. (It looked like their wives dragged the guys who were in attendance. I don’t know whether guys are not giving this performance a chance or if the show needs to work appealing to men.) The talented cast really makes this a show worth seeing. “Legally Blonde” gets an A+ in my book.
