Travel Club Prepares for Italian Adventure

Monday, March 08, 2010 By Joe Sauer

Travel Club is beginning their final preparations for this summer’s upcoming trips. This year, students will be traveling to Italy through Travel Club. Students are excitedly awaiting the final decisions to be made for their trip this summer. The group set the trip for sometime in mid-July of this coming summer of 2010. The exact dates are one of the many things that the club has yet to finalize. An estimated 30 students are on board for the summer trip so far. Teacher sponsors for the trip are Ms. Becky Amen, Mrs. Karen Kutz and possibly Mr. Jim Perkins. To raise money for the Italy trip, Travel Club put on a bake sale unlike any other. Auntie Anne’s Pretzels Company allowed Travel Club to use their goods in their bake sale. The Auntie Anne’s sale just recently ended on February 9. Forty percent of students’ individual sales go to their Italy trip fund. Travel Club tour guide, similar to a club officer, freshman Lindsay Roberts said that he "personally made $179 at the Auntie Anne’s bake sale for my trip." Lindsay also told me that she "immediately signed up for the trip as soon as they announced it. I’m very excited, it will be totally awesome." The two other Travel Club tour guides are freshman Jon Thompson and junior Jennifer Roberts, Lindsay’s sister. Travel Club does all of their trips through the EF Educational Travel Company. The Egypt trip next year, although being sponsored by Mrs. Barbour rather than Travel Club, will use the same company. Travelers are especially excited for the trip to Italy because there is a possibility that they will be there during the Italian horse races and festival, which is a very highly anticipated event in Italy. Students will also travel to seven different cities in Italy. The plan as of now is to do as much sight-seeing as possible to get the best possible cultural experience. For more information on the Travel Club’s Italy trip, students can talk with club sponsor Ms. Amen in Room 133. Travel Club also meets about once or twice a month. Ms. Amen describes Travel Club meetings as "very informational and anyone can come, whether you have been to previous meetings or not." Amen went on to say, "We discuss a different country each month. Last month we tried to have a meeting over Australia, but scheduling conflicts made it difficult, so this month’s meeting on the 23rd is Australia." So if a wonderfully exciting adventure through Italy interests you at all, talk to Ms. Amen or attend the next Travel Club meeting.
