Strange, absurd scholarships awaitThursday, March 11, 2010 By Eliza Fazliu
If you are looking for a creative and different way to pay for college, applying for strange scholarships is a great idea. Scholarships can vary greatly in what they are looking for; that doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance, it means you have a greater opportunity to fit into many areas. Beginning my list of about a half a dozen scholarships, the only requirement you need to fill is that you look good almost always with a milk mustache. The scholarship is called SAMMY, Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year; and if you excel in academics, athletics, leadership, and community services with an amazing milk mustache, you’re as good as in. Uncommon last names can sometimes be a hassle: no one can ever say it right, and you always have to spell it for people. The great thing is though some last names come with scholarships. If you have the last name Van Valkenburg, $1,000 may be closer than you think with the help of the Van Valkenburg Memorial Scholarship. Do you like potatoes? Do you see potatoes in your future? The Potato Industry Scholarship offers up to $2,000 to two senior students who are in a field of study related to potatoes. If you like to show your creativity through what you wear, it’s time to head to the hardware store and buy some Duck Tape. The Duck Brand Duct Tape Stuck on Prom Contest gives $6,000 in scholarships to the winning couple that makes their prom outfits out of Duct Tape. They even have past year examples on their website to help with future ideas. Hopefully you can listen, read, and write. For the American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship, participants are given a lecture and an essay on fire sprinkler safety; then they are given a test about the two. Every correct answer on the test enters them in a scholarship drawing. Being able to hold a camera and talk about how good tea is will get you noticed by The Tea Association of the USA’s contest. If you can make a video endorsing tea, you have a shot at this scholarship. Lastly, The Gallery Collection offers a scholarship to students for simply designing a creative, and non-obscene, greeting card. Now you can be the one writing a cheesy Hallmark card, and pay your way through college for it. Easy, right? Most of these scholarships can be found online, and most of them have simple requirements. Anyone can apply for as many as they’d like, which is highly recommended, because you would be increasing your chances of winning money for college |
