The Cougar

The CW premiered “The Vampire Diaries” Sept. 2009 and honestly, an hour of this is far more entertaining than two of “Twilight.” From writer and producer Kevin Williamson, “The Vampire Diaries” centers around Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a 17-year-old high school student who was recently orphaned. As she returns to school to get back to her normal life, she meets a new boy in the town of Mystic Falls, Stefan Salvador (Paul Wesley). Of course things get complicated since 1) he's a vampire, 2) she looks just like his old love from 1864, Katherine, and 3) his bad boy brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) decided to come back. The first couple of episodes were more of a love development between Elena and Stefan. The new season, though, definitely has kept me at the edge of my seat with a pack load of vampire action. Damon confesses his true purpose for returning to Mystic Falls: to release his love, Katherine, from a tomb where all vampires were locked in by vampire hunters (who, by the way, were Elena's ancestors). Many new vampires appear mostly due to Damon's malicious acts, but also to retrieve diaries from ancestors that reveal the location of the hidden tomb. The quickly developing plot in which everything somehow connects not only surprised me, but also scared the living daylight out of me. What's so refreshing about “The Vampire Diaries” is that is doesn't drag out mysteries with no sight of an end. It actually provides jaw-dropping answers to questions while raising new challenges. The believable actors and the suspenseful storyline makes one episode have more action before the first commercial break, than the entire “Twilight” movie. Catch “The Vampire Diaries” every Thursday at 8 p.m. on the CW. It will leave you speechless, or bloodless. |
