Cavalier Movie Review: Alice in Wonderland

Thursday, May 06, 2010 By Lauren Larrabee

The movie Alice in Wonderland is about a girl named Alice who has been proposed to by a man named Hamish, whom she does not want to marry. When this happens, she sees a rabbit in a trench coat and follows it. Next thing she knows she is falling down a hole into a mysterious land she calls “Wonderland”. There, Alice is given the task of slaying the Jabberwocky to make the White Queen the Queen of Wonderland again. She also has to throw the White Queen’s evil sister, the Queen of Hearts, out of her position as ruler of Wonderland. In this version of Alice in Wonderland they changed the story slightly; in the original version Alice is a young girl and when she falls asleep she enters Wonderland. But in the new version of the movie, Alice is older and she runs away from a proposal and falls down a rabbit hole. I would recommend this movie to children older than six years of age because some may find the movie frightening because of the visual effects or costume design for some characters. Although Alice in Wonderland is a great movie, some may think it is “creepy” or “different” because of the visual effects and some of the characters. Personally, I thought the Mad Hatter, played by Johnny Depp, was a scary character that belonged in a horror movie. I also thought the Cheshire Cat was creepy; I could see that cat being in a bad dream. The director of Alice in Wonderland was Tim Burton. Mia Wasikowska played Alice in the movie. I think both Depp and Wasikowska acted out their parts very nicely. In conclusion, I think Alice in Wonderland is a wonderful movie and would definitely recommend it.
