Corbin Students: Slaves to Fashion?Friday, September 17, 2010 By Samantha Hicks
Most of us find that we have our own views on what is “fashionable.” However, here at Corbin High School, when you see one person in something, chances are you’re going to see the majority of the school in it by the end of the week. “They all sort of blend together; a couple of people will wear the newest trend and then everybody else will follow,” said senior Corey Huff. The fact is that fashion trends around small towns such as Corbin never dramatically change from year to year. In big cities like New York, NY a new trend sweeps over every few months. However, the looks you see on the runway and in Vogue are way too extreme to wear around places like Corbin. When asked if these fashions are appropriate, Huff said “no! They’re ugly! What girl in her right mind is going to wear something like that?!” Sophomore Marisa French said “fashion trends don’t drastically change from year to year. The way people wear the clothes change, but not the brand.” The biggest back to school fashion trend this year seems increasingly obvious: skirts for girls and v-necks for guys. You can’t walk down the hall without seeing at least five people in a 10-foot radius sporting the new hottest crazes. Senior Chelsea Nipper said “skirts are becoming more and more popular every year, but this year they just seem to be everywhere.” Junior Ty Cobb said “I would have to say v-necks are the hottest fashion trend for guys this year. Everybody’s wearing them.” Between school, sports, clubs, and keeping up with a fast-paced social life students don’t have the time to track magazines like Vogue , GQ , and Glamour . However, there are a few exceptions. Sophomore Julie Crawford said “plaid’s a big thing this year. Also, in Glamour magazine I saw a lot of messenger bags, so they’re going to be big this year as well.” Junior Taylor Moody said “I’ve seen a lot of vintage inspired clothes lately, a little bit of retro here and there as well.” Sometimes you question whether people mean to follow the trends or that’s all that’s in the store. Sophomore Maggie Ballou said “I buy whatever’s in the stores because they obviously know what looks good.” |
