: Previewing the coming week; reveiwing the past

Sunday, August 29, 2004 By by LHS Journalism and Newspaper classes

Today’s column marks the beginning of the 29th year of continuous operation of the LHS News Bureau and the publication of this column. Once again one of the primary purposes of the bureau will be to write and submit this column for the Sunday Boomerang. The goal of this column will be to preview the coming week’s activities and review events of the past week. Athletic events will usually not be highlighted because of our Friday afternoon deadline and the excellent coverage all LHS sports receive in the Boomerang sports pages. The bureau will once again be made up of reporters enrolled in the journalism and newspaper classes taught by Bob Roth. In summary, the mission of the bureau is to keep the community informed of some of the many positive events and accomplishments of the students, faculty and staff at LHS. School pictures this week Lifetouch Photography will take school pictures at LHS this Monday and Wednesday from 11:05 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (lunch and SEB). All students will be required to have their photos taken for school records at no cost. Photo packages can also be ordered the day the photos are taken only. Students will need to bring the photo information flier along with the proper amount of money for the package selected. The picture packages range from$8 to $24.50. Seniors may also use this school photo in the yearbook. --Tenae Mascarenas Open House Thursday The annual LHS Open House will be this Thursday, from 6:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Greetings and orientation information will be presented in the large gym at 6:15. Parents are encouraged to bring their son or daughter’s class schedule, although schedules will also be available in the main office should you forget. Parents will be given the opportunity to follow their child’s class schedule through eight periods, ten minutes in length with five-minute passing periods between each class. Individual teachers will present an overview of class schedule, grading procedures, curriculum, and expectations for the class. Parents will not have the opportunity to have individual conferences with teachers about students due to the short schedule and lack of privacy. If parents wish to schedule a private conference they can fill out a "Please Contact" form. The Parent Teacher Student Association, University of Wyoming, Laramie County Community College, Wyoming Student Loan Corporation, clubs and other organizations will also have informational tables set up in the main lobby. --Charles Buxton Classes continue tomorrow Besides the activities mentioned above, students will continue reviewing the Parent-Student Handbook, handed out last Thursday in SEB. Before travel is permitted on Friday, all students must have their Emergency Health, Home Language Survey, and Code of Conduct forms returned to the school. These forms were included in the August mailing packet. Any students wishing to park in the parking lots must also receive a parking permit through the Business Office. Meeting times and places for clubs and organizations will once again be included in the "Weekly Schedule" distributed to teachers each week for posting in their classrooms. This week will conclude with a full slate of LHS sports. For a complete schedule of Plainsmen and Lady Plainsmen sports see "Schedule set" in today’s column. --Mandy Smith Students begin school year The 2004-2005 school year began last Tuesday at LHS with a "Gold Day" or blocks one through eight. Students were then dismissed at 11:30 a.m. for a faculty and staff in-service day that afternoon. Wednesday was the first maroon Day (blocks one through four) while Thursday was the first White Day (blocks five through eight). Approximately 760 students were registered as of last Friday. The enrollment is expected to fluctuate somewhat in the coming weeks. --Travis Wroblewski August events varied Last Monday, Albany County School district employees began the day with a district-wide Welcome Back Breakfast served by the School Board in the LHS small gym. The breakfast was followed by a few brief remarks by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Brian Recht and the two co-presidents of the Albany County Education Association. A LHS faculty meeting followed. Teachers and staff spent the afternoon preparing for the beginning of the school year. Earlier in the month, sophomores and other students new to the building attended three orientation sessions on Aug. 3, 5, and 10. Students who missed one of the sessions will make up the time missed during SEB. Also in August, students received informational packets in the mail that included their 2004-05 class schedule and other materials relevant to the new school year. Eleven faculty members who did not teach at LHS last year began their teaching assignments last week. They were among secondary teachers new to the district that participated in orientation and training activities that began on Aug. 16. The fall sports program also began practices earlier this month. --Micah Shuster Schedule set Monday: School pictures for first floor SEBs, 11:05 a.m.-1:25 p.m., large gym; cheer and dance clinics, 3:30-5:30 p.m., small gym; CPR/First Aid class, 5 p.m., cafeteria; choir trip meeting, 7 p.m., music room.
