Sam Houston Jones DeerWednesday, September 29, 2010 By Anna J
The does at Sam Houston Jones State Park are skinny and appear malnourished. According to Park Manager Nicole Adams, the deer get “very skinny in the summer.” Adams said the deer may be suffering in part from the heat and trying to recover from giving birth to fawns and nursing. The park has seen the birth of several fawns this year, which Adams said were healthy. “The bucks don’t seem to lose as much weight over the summer. When it gets cold in the winter, they usually fatten up some,” Adams said. Although some visitors to the park have been concerned about the deer’s weight, Adams assures them that it is just part of the circle of life. |
