Lady Gaga Meat Dress Madness

Thursday, September 30, 2010 By Kimberly Cruz

Lady Gaga has a notorious way of dress, designed for spectacle and impact. No other entertainer today can compare to her fashion standards. She has amazed us with the head-to-thigh lace outfit at last year’s VMA's; her Kermit the Frog dress on a German interview talk show; and her bubble dress which was entirely inspired by a Hussein Chalayan piece. Fans love Lady Gaga’s one-of-a-kind style. She has skirted the line of decency but never widely offended the public with her mode of dress. That is … until the 2010 MTV Movie Awards when we all got a glance at the "meat dress." Members of the animal rights group People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, who were watching live were outraged when they took a closer look into Lady Gaga's outfit. She has surprised the viewing audience many times before in things she has done or wore – remember when she covered herself with “blood”? Gaga’s gown for the evening was made of meat. Layers of loin, slices of sirloin, and sections of steak. Even her hat and shoes literally objectified her meat mania. But is wearing actual meat as material going too far? This was a shock to many viewers and offensive to vegetarians. “I think it has animal cruelty written all over it,” said Haley Garrison, freshman . "Lately, Lady Gaga has been having a hard time keeping her act 'over the top'. Wearing a dress made out of cuts of dead cow is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people who are more upset by butchery than who are impressed by it" -President of PETA, Ingrid E. Newkirk . “I thought it was gross, and totally unfair to all her vegetarian fans and especially to the animals,” said Khari Jaxon, sophomore. Yes, people. It is cow meat! Poor innocent animal. Already designated to become a meal and its skin shoes, clothes or furniture but this time, the meat became material. “It is one of Lady Gaga's ways of getting publicity. It is gross. I also heard that the designer of the dress is going to dry the meat and make it into a beef jerky dress,” Peter Tran, sophomore . Lady Gaga, defended herself when she said , "It is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. It has many interpretations. For me, we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights...we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones." “And I am not a piece of meat,” she added. “Lady Gaga's meat dress may look weird and all, but most of her dresses send out a message,” said Oscar Ramirez, sophomore . “Her ‘statement’ makes no sense. The fact of the matter is that her outfit was disrespectful to everyone not only vegans. Instead of wearing the meat, she could have given it to needy families," said Arlene Avita, senior. “If she is not a piece of meat then why did she wear the dress that is symbolizing her being a piece of meat....I feel like if you’re going give false accusations then, get out the industry!” said Janaye Corbray, sophomore . Lady Gaga made a statement to defend what she believes. Yet, dead animal protein might have missed the mark. Gaga could have found another way to symbolize her beliefs and provoke dialogue without offending anyone.
