The Bryant Clipper
School lunch: Mix it up!Sunday, November 28, 2010 By Nathalie Garcia
You find yourself rushing, running down the stairs to escape those four walls that held you captive. As you’re running, the smell of defrosted pizza and beef patties hits you. If you're a Bryant student you know what I’m talking about. Don’t you wish you were allowed to go out and eat? “I think we should be able to go out,” said Senior Class President Domenick D’Angelo. “I know Bronx Science high school does it. Just because some kids won’t come back to school doesn’t mean the rest won’t.” Is this what the school system is afraid of, cutting rates ? Bronx Science and La Guardia are specialized high schools. In average, their students have a much more rigid schedule than most of Bryant students, yet they are allowed to eat outside the school’s premises. Being allowed to go out during our lunch period would allow us to clear our minds, thus energizing us for our next class. “Bryant is surrounded with small take- out restaurants with a wide variety of foods,” said Key Club Vice President Fahad Huq. “A simple security system could and should ensure a safe way for students to experience the diversity of the neighborhood’s food.” We want our freedom; we want to be able to indulge ourselves with whatever it is that we want for lunch. We deserve at least a chance to prove that we’re serious about our education and that a break won’t affect our attendance. Why not give us a chance to prove that we can be responsible enough? Since attendance is taken every period, this will be the proof to our commitment. Seniors who are able to prove that they can make it on time for their next class shouldn’t be deprived of this privilege. As seniors we’re preparing ourselves to attend college, giving us more opportunities in life as well as responsibility. Once we’re in college there won’t be any teachers tracking us down to see if we’re in class or not. This is why we should practice this freedom now so we can learn how to responsible in life after high school. If this project succeeds juniors should be given the same opportunity. Juniors, as well as seniors, go through the toughest and roughest days; worrying about SAT prep, Regents and AP exams. That’s exactly why we should be able to go out; to clear our minds from all our stress. |
