The Wick
Chicago Wolves Media DaySunday, December 12, 2010 By Karli Bell
On Tuesday, December 7, I went out to Hoffman Estates and was able to get amazing advice from journalists and Chicago Wolves hockey players. I was able to meet Harry Teinowitz, Jill Carlson, Scott Gregor, and Paul LaTour. All four of these journalists gave advice on how to excel in the world of journalism, whether it's broadcast journalism or print journalism. Even though all four of these journalists have different experiences and backgrounds, they were able to give advice to hopeful future journalists. Jill Carlson has always been one of my idols. She is one of the few women sports anchors. She gave me the most advice. Working in what is called "a man's world," she was able to pull through and shine. Her job is my future. I want to be one of the first woman play-by-play announcer for the NFL. She gave me hope by saying that a journalist cannot be afraid of failure. Journalists need to be outgoing and not afraid to be denied. Harry Teinowitz gave a more comedic feeling to journalism. He gave advice on being confident and competitive in the field of journalism. You need to be able to do anything to get the answers you want. Overall, this experience made me realize how narrow and competitive the journalism field is, especially broadcasting. It ignited the flame for me to chase after my dream and to never give up. This experience made me get a glimpse at what the journalism field is like and showed me what I need to do to get to my dream, especially being a female. This experience shaped me and I hope I can do this again. |
