Interesting Person of the MonthTuesday, January 04, 2011 By Christian Ellens
This month’s interesting person is Tom. Tom Turkey to be exact. Male turkeys are called Tom turkeys, but where does their name originate? Ironically, Benjamin Franklin gave turkeys this name to spite Thomas Jefferson, who refused to let the turkey become the United States’ national bird. Today, the eagle is a well known patriotic symbol, but imagine what our national emblem would look like if it was a turkey instead. The marines would likely have a fighting turkey smoking a Cuban cigar. We would no longer hunt turkeys or eat them for dinner. Instead, we would feast on duck, because chicken is too common, and duck can be hunted. We would turn the turkey from a loving, laughable creature into a malicious, warlike figurehead. Most will agree, the eagle represents our country very well and turkeys are better left as gobbling bozos. Turkeys just seem too innocent to lead a war. |
