Break a Leg

Practice makes perfect, and that’s exactly what everyone had to do for the one-act play, the Inspector General this winter. Once students are cast in a play, they’re going to want to keep coming back and joining another play, and that’s how the new-comers seem to feel. “It’s really fun, and I’d be willing to do it again,” freshman Matt Syzmonski said. The differences seem to fade during play practice, even auditions for that fact. “What I really liked is that the auditions weren’t too competitive, like sports auditions usually are. You just do your best and do great at what part you got, not compete for a different spot,” senior Sarah Syzmonski said. Junior Tedd Schaffer says the reason he joined the play was because, “my friend [senior] Doug Kronaizl is in the play.” Schaffer indicated that he’ll most likely join another play. Schaffer’s favorite part in the play is where the Mayor is scolding him, and the other deputy, sophomore Will Getzin throws him out on the street. “My favorite [part] is the group of people. We’re always joking around and having a good time,” Sarah said. It seems that everyone wants to come back and for all different kinds of reasons. As freshman Andrew Granaas put it, “I love the costumes and being certain characters.” Plays can be tiring, and long practices add to be an even longer day. “Learning lines is kind of stressful, [but] I met a bunch of new people,” Matt said. “My favorite part of the play was where Osip, [Matt Syzmonski], flirts with Mishka, [sophomore Heidi Osterberg], but the scene got cut. I’m also kind of glad that scene got cut because I couldn’t keep a straight face,” Matt said. “I think it’s more fun to watch. Then [I] don’t know what’s going to happen and I get to laugh,” Granaas said. For as coming back and joining another play, “I definitely enjoy [the play],” Granaas said. Sarah seems to agree. “This is my first time in a play. I’m definitely doing the spring play. I’m having a blast! It’s a really fun group of people.”
