The Icing on the CakeThursday, May 19, 2011 By Jamie Medrano
Senior Francisco Ortega was voted this year’s prom king, most athletic, and will be remembered by many girls as having one of the cutest ways of asking a girl to prom. Before Francisco could even hope to imagine being king, he had to choose his queen: and without hesitation, decided to ask Senior Isabel Magaña to be his date, “He sent Jose Cortez with a flower and note card to Ms. Price’s class to me. Then a minute latter, all of the 6 th period senior internship class showed up, and he arrived after everyone with two balloons. One balloon said “yes” and one said “no”. After I said yes, he gave me a hug and let the balloon that said “no” out the class into the sky and gave me the one that said “yes” With his queen at his side, Francisco strove to become king, and stated, “I posted it up on facebook and told people to vote for me. I also sent text messages to people, and put up posters around campus. I also handed out key chains, perfumes, and colognes.” When asked why he decided to run for prom king, Francisco shared that he wasn’t quite sure, “It was my competitive nature, I guess.” Francisco shared that it was a great experience for him, “All the senior class in one room, for one final event together, that’s what I enjoyed the most.” He also added that he was extremely grateful for Isabel’s company throughout the course of the evening. Francisco shared that the only real preparations he had were to buy Isabel’s corsage, and to buy his suit, “Yes, I wanted to buy it, and not rent a tux. I wanted to be able to reuse it later on if need be.” Francisco shared that he and his friends “had an adventure” after prom. Remembering the thought, he began to laugh as he recounted the events, “Dezjon, Reggie, Kevin and I ran out of gas at a parking lot. We waited for two hours to get gas, and then it took another half hour to put the gas into the car. We got lost; Reggie’s horrible with directions-even though he had a GPS! We finally came back to Rialto, and went to Corkies to eat.” When asked if being prom king made this year memorable, Francisco said that it did not, “I had already accomplished many more important things before it. But it was a very…it was the icing on the cake.” Francisco also took the time to say that he was very happy, and was very thankful to all of the people who voted for him.
