Trojan Talk
Black History earns another winThursday, May 26, 2011 By Tanika Bellamy
Five years in a row and the Lincoln Trojans have done it once again. The Black History Brain Bowl team has won the state championship for the 2010-2011 school year. “It comes natural to us ... we’re Trojans,” senior Zach Laranang said. BHBB is one of the many clubs here. Students join and get together to study about black history. Anybody is welcome to join. This year’s championship was held March 25 in Orlando. Lincoln competed against 10 other district and regional winners. “It’s hard work, but not that hard, all you have to do is try,” junior Brandon Baker said. According to one of the BHBB instructors, Michael Zatoris, the team is different from those at other schools because “we use more effort, work and practice.” The team members practice two to four hours a day and quiz each other over the material they‘ve read. “We have a lot of success to live up to,” he added. The outcome of the team’s winning is a variety of scholarships from many Florida schools, including Florida State University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, University of Southern Florida, University of Central Florida and University of Florida. “Teamwork is the most important part; you learn more that way and (it) helps guide you through,” Baker said. “It’s how we make it.” In order to join the team, students can tryout during the first week in September of next school year.
