DeMay Takes Job at International Academy

Next year, Lake Shore will be losing an infamous English teacher, Shawna DeMay, who is leaving the school to teach at an advanced baccalaureate school. Deciding to try something new and expand her horizon was an idea all her own. She applied to and got hired at The International Academy of Macomb. This is an excellent and exclusive public school where students who wish to attend need to take a test and get a satisfactory grade. Although this school is public, it is not school of choice. To be eligible for attendance, students need to live in a participating district. According to their website, The International Academy of Macomb is a high school for highly motivated students who want to earn an International Baccalaureate diploma. This baccalaureate diploma gives students a more rigorous education and an advantage of being able to get into schools internationally after high school. The International Academy of Macomb is modeled after another school that is the top third school in the United States. The curriculum will be more difficult than it is at Lake Shore, but DeMay is excited for the challenge. DeMay’s schedule for next year at the new school will be four ninth grade classes, one tenth grade class and two twelfth grade classes. DeMay says she will miss students and staff, but doesn’t appear to be too worried because she is confident when saying that the friends she made on staff here at Lake Shore will be friends she keeps forever. Lisa Macomber says, "Ms. DeMay is an inspirational teacher who is passionate about reading and writing and shares that with her students. Although I am happy for her for receiving this great opportunity, I can't help but be sad for Lake Shore for losing our Teacher of the Year." Mr. Akerley remembers some good times with DeMay, “I will miss the following: Co-hosting Mr. Lakeshore with her, all of her shenanigans, her LOUD VOICE, her love of poetry… and much more. In the words of Dr. Seuss: ‘Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.’ Farewell DeMay!” Ms. Odinga’s also expressing how she will miss DeMay comments, “I will miss DeMay yelling ‘Good Morning, Schmo!’ to me from down the hallway. I will miss her Irish accent (as bad as it is). But I wish her the best and know that her new students will benefit from her incredible wit, dedication, and creativity.” DeMay wants to be remembered here at Lake Shore as a good teacher who put her students first, and she certainly will be. Mr. Bowers principal of Lake Shore High School says “The IB Academy's gain is certainly our loss. We will miss her very much. Best of wishes to Ms. DeMay.” Teachers aren’t the only ones losing out. Former AP English student Andrew Wilson, “feels bad for the students who signed up to take AP English and will not be able to have her as a teacher. Finding someone to match her unique personality and one-of-a-kind teaching style will be near impossible.” Ms. Fast’s farewell, “At least students will be able to walk through the halls without someone requesting the removal of a hat in French. Sadly the new students will never know what it is like for their teacher to be in love with a dead man (Shakespeare).”
