Americans are ignoring global responsibilitiesSaturday, June 04, 2011 By Brittney Wallace
What is the point of the United Nations? From what Mrs. Garvin taught me in the tenth grade, I was under the impression that it meant that 51 countries come together and cooperate to keep world peace. If this is the purpose of the organization, then why aren’t we doing anything about Libya? And please don’t say that it’s because the Libyans were violently protesting, and the government was just trying to keep them at bay. These people want their freedom, yet are being shot by huge rubber bullets that are strong enough to blow through a brick wall. Imagine what it can do to a human body? This is inhumane, and should be stopped. People say President Obama is supposed to be meeting with the United Nations next week to try and figure out what they’re going to do about the situation. Do we really need a meeting to figure out what we’re supposed to do? Genocide is being committed in a third world country, and the biggest issue we’re concerned with is how long Lindsay Lohan will be in jail, or Charlie Sheen’s infamous rants. As one of the most influential countries in the world, we need to step in and save people who can’t save themselves. Yes, I’m aware that our military is already divided in two different wars, but I think this is an issue that is more pressing. We didn’t do anything about Darfur, which lasted twenty years, and is still happening to this day. I don’t know how long this is going to last, or to the extent that it will escalate, but we didn’t do anything about the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, or Darfur; let us not repeat our mistakes, for those who don’t learn from their past, are condemned to repeat it. |
