Hawks defeat Union Hill

Wednesday, September 07, 2011 By Brittany Clark

Hawkins left Union Hill with a 13-10 victory over the Bulldogs on Friday, September 2. "Both teams came into the game 0-1 and looking for their first win, but thanks to the War Hawk defense, the Hawks prevailed," Head Coach Keith Cook said. The Hawks scored their first offensive points of the year when Levi Sherrill scored on a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter. The last play of the half turned out to be a game-changing moment. Hawkins' free safety, Lavon Davis, intercepted a Bulldog pass and returned it for a 65-yard TD on the last play of the half, putting the Hawks ahead 13-0. Union Hill scored early in the fourth quarter on a long run and then added the 2-point conversion to make the score 13-8 Hawks. At the end of the game, the Hawks were backed up to their own 1-yard line and elected to take a safety in order to get the free kick and get the ball out of our end of the field. Victory was secured when Ethan Edwards sacked the Union Hill Bulldogs QB on the final play. The Hawks now hold a 1-1 record.
