Rachel's Challenge Friday, September 23, 2011 By Krystal Dispennette
The reason behind the shootings was because two boys, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, thought they were being ignored because of the way they dressed and because they weren't in any sports. During their senior, year they decided they had enough and planned what they thought was the only way to get back at the school. People thought they got the idea from the video game, Doom , and were highly influenced by music, Gothic subculture and Adolf Hitler . After the incident, the family of a victim of the shooting found writings from their daughter, Rachel Scott. They decided her death was not in vain, and spread her thoughts and ethics about life to millions of people and challenges them to change. Rachel Scott's ethics about life are: to be honest, compassionate, and to see the beauty in everyone. She said "Dare to place your trust into someone, and they will place trust with you." She also stated that she would place honesty before humiliation and selfishness. Rachel also said that "You should give people more chances to show you who they are," meaning that the first impression that you get from someone is most likely not how they truly are. "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same." Rachel's thoughts have changed the way people act to one another despite the differences between them. |
