Kevin West, a BHS Class of 2005 graduate, is now attending medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). “I’m very proud of Kevin for doing something in which he can use his natural gift of intelligence, rather than wasting it,” BHS counselor and mother Karen West said. West accomplished many things during his years as a student and athlete at BHS. Those accomplishments include being a three sport athlete, being named “Academic Athlete of the Year,” being captain of multiple sports, and making All-District in multiple sports. “Kevin was a very coachable student,” coach Brett Morris said. “I could always depend on him, and I knew that he would be a leader.” West believes that he learned almost as much at BHS through his sports participation (he was the Bulldogs quarterback in his senior year and a leader on the basketball and baseball teams as well) as his classes. “My favorite memories of BHS are mostly of the varsity football games,” West said. “Another one of my favorite memories is of a basketball game during my junior year, in which we played against Burnet and won after four overtimes.” After his high school graduation, West attended college at Texas A&M, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree, made the Dean’s List. After graduation, he was accepted into a Master’s program at the University of North Texas, ere he finished at the top of his class, and earning his Masters in Medical Science in just one year. During the first part of his freshman year at A&M, West took business courses, along with mostly basic courses and those courses have now determined his future. “I began to find my science classes to be more enjoyable than others,” West said. With a new focus on the sciences, West began to shadow Dr. David Schmidt, a prominent San Antonio orthopedic surgeon (who also works for the San Antonio Spurs) and it was after these experiences that West decided to pursue a career in the medical field. West is currently in the first semester of his freshman year at the UTHSCA in San Antonio, hoping to specialize in orthopedics.
