Students experience Christmas in PeruMonday, November 07, 2011 By Virginia Marshall
This Christmas, Mrs. Bakeman’s dream to take a trip to Peru will come true when she travels with a group of 10 students from Dec. 17 to Dec. 26. In 2006, she took students to Spain and Morocco, and in 2007, she took students to Greece and Turkey. She said she chose Peru this year because the students will learn about the Aztec and Inca civilizations on an Explorica tour called "Incan Adventure." Many Norfolk Collegiate students have already learned about these civilizations in their Spanish classes, said Mrs. Bakeman, so the trip will be a great opportunity for them to see sites like Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. “I have always wanted to see Machu Picchu,” said Laura McCarthy. Mrs. Bakeman also plans to take these students to the capital of Peru, Lima, and the old capital of the Incan Empire, Cuzco. In addition, they will visit Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, which is located in the city of Puno. “I hope they absorb as much culture as they can and practice their Spanish,” said Mrs. Bakeman. She also hopes that the students will taste Peruvian food andbee able to watch indigenous festivals popular this time of year. |
