Junior Christina Mitchell Junior athlete Christina “Chris” Mitchell, number 7 on the girls’ volleyball team, just finished her first season on the team. Christina has never played volleyball before but feels that it’s fun and active. To prepare for the game, she practiced setting and bunting with her teammates. As one of the starters on the team, she most likes hitting the ball in her opponents’ faces. Christina felt that the season went well because they are undefeated and she enjoyed playing with her teammates. Christina started off on the team as their manager last year. She started learning how to play last year at practice when filling in for players who didn’t come. She continued to progress when playing over the summer. She shocked a lot of people when she joined the team and now has the opportunity to get a scholarship. Christina came from Western High School to play basketball for MATHS and also still plays with her AAU team. When she is not playing sports, she likes to read, eat, and listen to music. She likes the Athletics Department here and is looking forward to the upcoming basketball season. Junior Shellavene Lawson Junior athlete Shellavene Lawson, Jr., number 5 on the MATHS football team, has just finished his second season with the Panthers. Shellavene’s position on the field is running back, and he loves the atmosphere of the game. To prepare for each game, he gets focused and listens to music. Playing his second year, he feels that if the team were more focused, they could have won more than one game. Shellavene is a really talented athlete but felt he disappointed Coach Thomas at times. During his spare time he continues to enjoy football and watches it on TV. At MATHS, he likes the Athletics Department because it gives athletes a chance to get better at their sports.
