Other technology replacing the iPod

Tuesday, November 22, 2011 By Dylan McHale

Apple is one of the main empires often throwing out new technology, but iPods, one of the devices that made Apple a huge success, are now becoming less and less popular as more people find newer and easier ways to listen to music. There are many ways people listen to music; there are countless MP3 players on the market, many phones offer a music listening feature and, of course, there are many apple products including iPods, iPhones, and iPads. “IPods are decreasing, but because there are the iPhones and smart phones with what the iPod has plus more, and people want one thing with many purposes rather than having multiple things with only one purpose,” said junior Briana Beseler. Once it may have been cool to have as many devices as possible, but now it’s all about convenience. Many people have taken to listening to music on their phones with an MP3 player feature; this is now on many phones on many networks. Some popular phones that include a music player are HTC phones, Samsung Galaxy X, Nokia N95, the Samsung Juke and of course the iPhone. Another reason iPod popularity has been decreasing is because iPhones have had a huge increase in popularity. Originally iPhones were only available on the AT&T network, but this past year Verizon adopted the iPhone and it is now available on their network, this caused a huge increase in its popularity. Since then Verizon and AT&T have been marketing the iPhone, trying to get more potential buyers on their network; AT&T made the phone only $49 for a period of time while the phone is originally around $150-$200. “I think iPod popularity has gone down mainly because iPhone popularity has gone up,” said junior Maggie Albert. It’s not just the iPhone that it taking the shine away from the iPod; Apple has been putting out many new products and many updated products. The iPad 2 came out earlier this year and has been a huge hit, even though the iPad is essentially a giant IPod. Apple’s Mac desktop and laptop computers, which get updated often. The last update the IPod had was when a camera was added onto the device, since then the IPod has been outshined by all of the other Apple products and in return the sales of them are decreasing. Technology is constantly advancing and things will be replaced when it’s there time to come, who knows what Apple will come out with next, maybe they will revive the IPod or completely wipe it out for good.
