Not on Task…

Thursday, December 15, 2011 By Elizabeth Flores

We talk, we laugh, we joke around, I sit next to her in the bus, and I love her with all my heart… yes I call her my best friend. But having a class with her can be a total disaster. Nothing had gone wrong at first; I had Spanish and biology with her last year so I didn’t think that having Algebra ll with her would bring my grades down. At the beginning of the year we were placed far apart from one another because the teacher sat us alphabetical order, but she moved us like 3 times during the year, so somehow I ended in back of her. I thought it was going to be really fun having my friend with me, solving problems and talking (I mean who likes to be alone in a class?) but was I wrong. Almost every day I get there and after the teacher explains what were going to do I start my work. She gets there listens and starts talking about what she did last night. I’m not the type of person who ignores you, so I pay attention to her until she’s done. I have time to finish my work but I just don’t because I’m busy listening to her. But that’s not everything. My friend can add and subtract or multiply and divide in her head but paying attention now there’s the problem. After half an hour of explanation she comes to me so I can once again explain. I can’t judge her, she like my sister, but she can frustrate me sometimes. I have to stop what I’m doing and explain to her what’s need to be done. After a while of us doing some work she stops me to check on how she is doing. I don’t want to be mean and say “I don’t know” because I feel bad, so I just stop my work and check her paper. In my last report card I was barely passing. I was shocked! I had never gotten a grade less than an 80. Next semester I just hope on passing all my classes, and for her I talked to her already and we worked things out. We promised not to talk until were finished and only if we have a really big hard time with a problem. I think this next semester will be a lot easier for me, now that I kind of know what my classes are like. Second Semester, here I come!!
