Wrestling team searches for another state title

Friday, December 16, 2011 By Tyler Bolen

The wrestling team has big plans for this season. After winning three consecutive state titles they are once again ranked number one and looking for their fourth in a row. "This year I won't be satisfied with anything less than a state title as a team, as well as individually,” senior Tyler Karcher said. Karcher wrestles in the 120 pound weight class. Last weekend the varsity team travelled to Welsh, Ohio for the Ironman tournament. There were 70 teams in attendance and many nationally ranked teams and wrestlers. Junior Lance Hill placed eighth, "It’s probably at least ten times harder then anybody I would have to wrestle from West Virginia," Hill said. There were 20 nationally ranked wrestlers in his weight class. The team finished 20th, which is an improvement from last year’s 27th. South had four wrestlers move on to the second day. “As a team I think that we had a great tournament,” junior Jake Alexander said. Alexander went 1-2. There were three starters who did not make the trip, one was injured and two were taking the ACT.
