James Monroe Swimming

Monday, December 19, 2011 By Shanasia Carter

The James Monroe Swim Team’s popularity has been rapidly growing over the last few years. In previous seasons, the team has not had cuts, which means that everyone who tried out automatically made the team. This was not a problem until last season, when the team consisted of over 70 swimmers. Due to this increasing popularity, for the first time the swim team has had try-outs and cuts. New Head Coach Jordan Filchock, has chosen the top 40-50 swimmers who have the most to offer to the team. Jordan Filchock, who will be entering her first season as the JM swim coach, has a long list of credentials which include coaching for the local Rays year round team, being the coach of the undefeated Massad Marlins YMCA summer league team, and also being a long time competitive swimmer. Going to swim practice every night is no easy feat. The swimmers practice from 9:15 to 10:45 every night at the University of Mary Washington’s Goolrick Pool. Swim meets are held on Fridays, and are usually against two or more other schools. James Monroe defeated both Spotsylvania and Culpepper in their first meet. The Jackets won in style, sporting their new suits that have everyone excited. “The swim suits are pretty cool; it’s a whole mix of orange and black in a fun design called mighty python”, said Filchock. “Come support our team this season, It will be a great one!”
